JUST RELEASED: Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series presents “Callas on Film" in the Walter Reade Theater, March 17 and 18.
Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series will present a three-part film series that will delve into the phenomenon that was Maria Callas at the Walter Reade Theater in March. No vocal artist in the 20th century had a more striking presence both on stage and off than “La Divina.” “Callas,” said Leonard Bernstein, “was pure electricity.” Her instantly recognizable voice reintroduced bel canto to the musical landscape and also redefined the way that generations of singers and audiences approached opera. This three-part film series draws on rarely-seen source materials of performances, rehearsals, and interviews with this singular star.
Each film program will be introduced by the Opera News features editor Brian Kellow. Following the filmed program on March 17 starting at 3:30 PM, Mr. Kellow also moderates a panel discussion with soprano Martina Arroyo, Ira Siff (artistic director and prima donna of La Gran Scena Opera Company), and writer-director Stephen Wadsworth about Callas’s unique artistry and place among the great singers of the 20th century.
