Operavore calls Alban Berg’s Wozzeck ”an opera that is universally acclaimed as a 20th century operatic masterpiece.” Tonight, at 8pm, London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, will perform a concert version of Wozzeck in Avery Fisher Hall,as part of the 2012/13 Great Performers season. The featured singers are baritone Simon Keenlyside (as Wozzeck), Angela Denoke (as Marie), Hubert Francis (as Drum Major), Joshua Ellicott (as Andres), Peter Hoare (as Captain), and Tijl Faveyts (as Doctor), along with the Westminster Symphonic Choir and The American Boychoir.  

 

In this interview, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen discusses Mahler and his music. As part of this year’s Great Performers season, the Philharmonia Orchestra comes to Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall with two concerts. Tonight, at 5pm, the orchestra will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 under the baton of Salonen.
